Apple Plans to Launch a Subscription News Service

Apple reportedly launching subscription news service - A premium Apple News app

Bloomberg reports that Apple has acquired Texture, known as the “Netflix of magazines” and is now planning to develop its own subscription news service. Texture, which currently offers 200+ magazines for $9.99 per month, will be rolled into Apple’s News team with a new app with subscription option is expected to launch within the next year.

 

Apple has attempted a subscription news service in the past with its Newsstand app. The original app offered digital versions of newspapers and magazines but was discontinued when Apple moved to the Apple News platform instead. There was also a previous partnership with News Corporation to create an iPad only news publication called The Daily. The Daily was discontinued after less than two years with the explanation of a lack of audience to create a sustainable business model.

Rumors point to cheaper iPads and MacBooks this year

Rumor has it that Apple may lower prices on iPads and MacBooks this year. The MacBook Air is also rumored to be receiving a less-expensive refresh. The latest report comes from DigiTimes, which has reported that Apple will launch a new 13.3-inch “entry-level” MacBook late in Q2 this year, though its screen size suggests it may be an updated version of the Air, since the MacBook only comes with a 12-inch display. The timeline also matches with WWDC in June.

Apple releases new security update to protect Safari against the Spectre attack

Apple has released a security update for iOS, macOS and Safari to protect against attacks exploiting the recently published vulnerability called Spectre. Although few details are available on the updates themselves, Apple’s description states that the purpose is to protect against Spectre attacks and researchers responsible for discovering the bug have been thanked in the acknowledgements, including Google’s Jann Horn.

 

This is the second group of updates released by Apple, who confirmed that all devices running iOS and macOS were affected by the Spectre vulnerability. Another recently uncovered vulnerability, Meltdown, has already been addressed with specific patches released for iOS (11.2), macOS (10.13.2), and tvOS (11.2).

New GOP Health-Care Bill Analysis

New analysis of GOP health-care bill says 13 million more would become uninsured, fewer than CBO estimate. 

A report issued by the Office of the Chief Actuary of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services states that by 2026 there would be 13 million more Americans without health insurance with the House's Obamacare replacement bill, the AHCA.  This number is 10 million fewer people lacking health insurance in the next decade than had been estimated by the Congressional Budget Office. However, the report also projects higher premiums for many customers of individual health plans.
