Entrepreneur Tips: How To Avoid Entrepreneur Burnout

As an entrepreneur, you’re at a higher risk of burnout than almost any other group, especially as a solopreneur. Studies have shown that burnout in entrepreneurs is more likely to show up in the body than in the job.

Jade Barclay, a psychotherapist who recently completed her MBA Thesis on Entrepreneur Burnout said in an interview “There were a whole raft of cognitive symptoms that would show up, so just not being able to focus and things like that, brain fog, that kind of thing. A lot of people actually had body symptoms. It was common to have people say, "My body just completely shut down. I couldn't work anymore."

So how do you prevent this all too common occurrence? We’ve found 4 helpful tips to help you avoid entrepreneur burnout.

Keeping Your Eye on the Ball

HELLO | TWELVE, NOVEMBER 2019

Happy Friday!  Wow, it has been such a busy fall, right?!  Like head-spinning busy- for me both personally and professionally.  As we've shared, Delegate has won some pretty great awards this fall- we grabbed the #52 spot on the fastest growing companies in Philly (woot!  The Philly 100!!), and I won Small Business Person of the Year with the Philly Chamber (a high honor! for me personally!).

This combined with the challenges of a growing company along with a whole bunch of big shifts in my personal life equals a lot to manage!   With all of this swirling around me, it's hard to stay focused week over week towards the game-changing work.

Below are a few of the strategies I use to keep my eye on the ball:

TGIF and Happy Friday!  Hope all our friends in the Southeast are faring well through Dorian.  Many of our team are in Florida, Charleston, Wilmington and other parts of eastern North Carolina, so sending extra love and support to them this week!

We are excited to share that we are one of the 100 fastest growing, privately held companies in Philadelphia (the Philly 100®)!  We are super proud of this win, and while it's a big deal to us, even more importantly this is an incredible win for the flex & remote work movement

Inbox cleanup 101

LEARN | TWELVE, SEPTEMBER 2019

When it comes to decluttering your work life, I always like to start with my email inbox. There is nothing more overwhelming than a cluttered inbox where the important is mixed in with all of those junk emails you never read.

Lets face it, half of what comes into your inbox you probably delete without even opening! OR you leave it in there for fear of deleting something important and actually end up missing the true important stuff.

I like to keep an inbox of a rotating 5. Thats right FIVE emails! Here are my tips and tricks on how to clean up that inbox, make sure nothing gets lost, and relieve that inbox stress immediately.

Make a Commitment to "Good Enough"

HELLO | TWELVE, AUGUST 2019

TGIF, Happy Friday and hello from the coast of North Carolina, where a group from Team Delegate has assembled for our annual retreat. Given that we are a 100% remote, distributed team, this year's retreat is really exciting for us because we have the opportunity to spend face time with the members of our NC contingent of Delegate.

This month I've been thinking a lot about commitment.  It could be because my fiancee and I just added another dog (third!!) to our family that commitment is heavy on my mind!  Or, perhaps it's my own personal evolution of hanging in there even when things are not "perfect" because I made a commitment to do so.  Either way, honoring our commitments is not always the easy choice, but it is a mindset shift that brings with it personal growth, stability and consistency.

How to Move From Make it Up to Make it Real

HELLO | TWELVE, jULY 2019

TGIF, Happy Friday and happy Independence Day!

As Visionaries, our greatest contribution is our ability to see our companies as globally as possible. We are uniquely able to understand and prioritize the most pressing needs, and then design creative solutions to to move forward.

I don't know how this process typically works for you, but for me it's typically super-organic and instinctual. Once we identify the problem, I give myself the space to creatively think about how we might solve it. Or sometimes, I'm not even thinking about it at all, and the answer suddenly just comes to me. What a feeling, right? :)

The challenge then lies in how to take this idea and model it, build it, test it and roll it out. This is where our team can become a true complement to our abilities. I follow a simple process to make my ideas real:

In Search of More Time

LEARN | TWELVE, JULY 2019

Time. It can be your best friend or it can be your worst enemy, it’s all a matter of how you look at it.I’ve often found myself struggling to find the time to get things, both professional and personal, done. At some point or another, we’ve all said to ourselves “if only there was more time in a day.” Well, I have some good news for you, sadly it’s not that I’ve found a way to magically add more hours to our days, but I have implemented the idea of time blocking into my personal and professional life and guess what?! IT REALLY WORKS!!

How to Take a Sabbatical From Your Business

HELLO | TWELVE, jUNE 2019

TGIF, Happy Friday! I am back in the office this week, fresh off a 3 week sabbatical-- my first! It was quite detoxifying and I am happy to report it was also a success. Thanks to a lot of planning, delegation and accountability, I was able to completely step away from running my business for three whole weeks and watch it run without me... and nothing blew up! It was divinely indulgent. Want to do the same?

Below are my tips to make this happen:
